Reno 911! The Complete First SeasonNot being a fan of television, Reno 911! is another show I never knew about until recently and I’m kicking myself once again. Reno 911! (as I am sure most of you will know) is a shot-on-video COPS style parody. Set in Reno Nevada the show focuses on a bunch of inept police officers led by the sexually ambiguous and daisy duke wearing Lt. Jim Dangle. I could write a paragraph about the characters and some of their quirks, or give a run down on the episodes, but I think that would ruin it for those who have never seen the show. I’ll just say that the characters are all highly dysfunctional but loveable . A few of the cop characters (mostly the females) also play villain characters which is another fun quirk of the show . I also like the fact that the female cops can be just as depraved and idiotic as the male cops, in the case of Deputy Trudy Weigel, well she’s probably the foulest of the lot. The comedy ranges from topics such as prostitution, sexuality, suicide, race, gender, terrorists, white trash, public service announcements, the Nation of Islam and class, simply - there’s nothing sacred in Reno 911!. It’s not politically correct and it is quite subversive and at times the show is quite crude but utterly charming at the same time. I hate saying this but it’s definitely a comedy show you will either love or hate. The content is offensive but is never malicious, but there are just some types out there that can not see the humour in such emotionally charged social issues no matter how witty the comedy is. Sometimes the humour is cringe worthy and sometimes it’s very subtle and it’s this aspect that really makes the show fun, it doesn’t constantly rely on over -the- top antics / a laugh a minute gags, ok most of the gags are over-the -top, but there’s some great sly comedy moments. The Beyond / Punchline DVD release of Reno 911! The Complete First Season features 14 episodes spread over two discs, each episode runs for about 22 minutes . In terms of extras there’s audio commentaries by the cast and the director as well as alternate and deleted scenes. There’s also an easter egg - if you click on the blue thumbtack on episode two there is a bonus commentary. For the price the show is enough in itself but the commentaries and deleted scenes will provide just as much entertainment and laughs as the show does. As well as the commentaries being entertaining there’s a lot of fun facts to learn such as - the show is pretty much all improvised. The characters are given a scenario and off they go, I was stunned at this I felt comedy this good must have been skilfully honed by a bunch of incredibly talented and funny writers. A must have release for fans of the show and a must rent for those who haven’t yet seen it. |
