Ninja Pussy CatThe sexy Female ninja -“Kunoichi”- exploitation sub-genre has made somewhat of a resurgence in recent years, polluting Digital Video Discs the world over and showing no signs of stopping (particularly the Lady Ninja Kasumi series which seems to be infinite). Ninja Pussy Cat and its director Hiroyuki Kawasaki are largely responsible for this revival. These films are essentially softcore period pieces whose only real noteworthy features are the humorously-named Kunoichi techniques these sexual assassins use to dispatch their victims e.g. - Venus Fly Trap, Honeypot Hell, Vagina Bubbles from Hell, etc. Ninja Pussy Cat’s plot goes something like this: set in 1500’s feudal Japan, Ninja Pussy Cat relates the saga of two warring clans - the Iga and Fuma. The Iga clan have just discovered a history-changing secret on the Fuma’s Shogun Hattori Hanzo concerning blood relations, and things are about to turn nasty. The Fuma wipe out the majority of the Iga clan and kidnap the shogun’s daughter, Kaede, whom he has thus far kept a secret. With Kaede bound securely in a basement Hanzo decides to train her in the arts of Kunoichi (a feminine form of Ninjitsu) She swiftly becomes adept at Kunoichi and eventually uses it against her kidnappers to avenge her fathers death. For a pink samurai “epic” this is a rather dull film. Of course the requisite sex scenes are present, some “sword-sex” and a couple of slightly amusing Kunoichi techniques are employed, but overall I found myself waiting impatiently for its 60 minute runtime to end. Yet again the director’s interview prevails as the most interesting feature on the disc as Kawasaki-san reminisces on working under Hisayasu Sato and Kurosawa as a young actor. Ultimately, I find it hard to recommend much about Ninja Pussy Cat and films of its ilk as in my opinion they are thoroughly boring, but like any niche genre I’m sure there are plenty of Kunoichi devotees out there, so here’s another for your collection!
