Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion [Volume One]Code Geass tells the tale of the Holy Empire of Brittania, this international superpower now controls over a third of the planet using its strategically talented members of royalty and their advanced weapons of war known as Knightmare Frames. Shortly after conquering Japan the wife of the ruler of Brittania is murdered leaving the youngest prince Lelouch alone with his sister who was crippled and blinded. Their father, the Emperor of Brittania, dismisses the two and leaves them to their fate. Volume One of Code Geass begins seven years after Japan has been conquered and is centred in Area 11. Area 11, once known as Japan, is controlled by Clovis the son of the Emperor. Clovis supports the segregation of the Brittanians and Japanese, and dubs Japanese as "11's". This racism is prevalent throughout Code Geass and is staggering in its violence and the hatred it represents. In the face of their oppressors, rebel factions form amongst the "11's" and fight back. In an attack upon the Brittanians, the Japanese liberate a truck bearing a suspected chemical weapon. Eager to reclaim this weapon the Brittanians unleash their Royal Guard including a platoon of Knightmare Frames. Here young Lelouch becomes truly involved in the story. After the captured truck crashes, Lelouch investigates the scene to see if the passengers are injured. To his surprise he finds a young female in the truck, after attempting to help her escape the scene she is shot. Here she shares a mysterious power with Lelouch known as Geass. This power enables Lelouch to give any human being an order. Including one as simple as "Die". This power is sure to hold centre stage for future episodes of Code Geass, and will turn tactical warfare on its head. An honourable mention is the quality of the art and design, featuring fresh new mech designs, amazing backdrops and characters to rival some of the best drawn anime of this generation. If you had not heard of Code Geass prior to its localised release then I highly recommend looking into it. It is easily one of the most gripping anime to be released in the past two years. Packed with action, violence, tactical warfare and engaging characters, Code Geass belts the viewer to their chair leaving them demanding more. |
